Toyota's Jarno Trulli triggered a first-lap, first-turn accident that brought an abrupt end of the day for four drivers.

That brought out the safety car, and the drivers had to wait for the racing to resume. Once it did, mechanical failure knocked Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen out of the action.

Button's teammate Rubens Barrichello took an early lead, so Button's crew gave the Briton a two-stop strategy, which would prove decisive. Barrichello led by nearly eight seconds after all the leaders had visited the pits. Button set-down a blistering pace before he pulled in for his second stop with 19 laps to go.
