Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, to nominate the Dragon Boat Festival as an intangible cultural heritage. The application work began last September, and UNESCO's evaluation process is underway.

The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu, falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The festival is marked to remember Qu Yuan, one of the greatest patriotic Chinese poets.

China's application to UNESCO contains four parts: the Duanwu customs in Qu Yuan's hometown in Zigui(姊归)county of Hubei province; the boat race of Huangshi(黄石)city in Hubei; the Duanwu customs on the banks of Miluo(汨罗)river in Hunan province; and the Duanwu Customs in Suzhou city of Jiangsu province.
