China's northwestern Shaanxi province is famous for its cultural legacy. And it has much more to offer besides the terror-cotta warriors of Qinshihuang. Now at least two tons of ancient coins have been found in Xianyang, the ancient capital of China's first emperor.

Some are big and others small and at least two tons of bronze coins have been excavated. These ancient coins were found during construction work at a local primary school in Xianyang city.

Judging from the four Chinese characters carved on the surface, the coins cover three dynasties: Tang, Song and Yuan from the early seventh century to mid 14th century.

The Pagoda of Queen Bao is located just near where the coins were found. And there was once a temple near the pagoda. Experts have wondered if the coins might have been donations from visitors who went to pray at the temple.

The construction work at the school has been stopped so as to allow for a proper excavation.
