Chinese filmmakers are marking the founding of the People's Republic of China, focusing on films made between 1949 and 1959. They gave an ensemble showing of over 40 films, which represent the summit of filmmaking during that period. As we approach the country's 60th anniversary, let's take a look at some of the movies made during the decade up to 1959.

Five Golden Flowers

This love story takes place in southwest China's Yunnan province, and features much singing and dancing. Its title song "By the Butterfly Creek" remains one of the country's most memorable movie soundtracks.

The movie gained recognition in the international market, garnering the Best Director's Prize for Wang Jiayi and a Best Actress Award for Yang Likun at the Afro-Asian Movie Festival in 1960. The "Five Golden Flowers" has been shown in a record-breaking 46 countries and regions.
