The tenth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China was called the "unforgettable 1959", and was an abundant year for film. 18 movies were made especially for the anniversary, and another 35 films were screened to celebrate the big day. 1959 was regarded as the first peak of Chinese film industry. On today's Spotlight, we continue to discover behind-the-scene stories of those classic movies.

"Song of Youth"

The movie was adapted from a novel of the same name. It is the first work to portray intellectuals joining the revolution in modern Chinese literature. The novel tells how a tender, young female student, Lin Daojing, transforms into a revolutionary. Helmed by Cui Wei and Chen Huaiai, the "Song of Youth" was selected to be one of the representative movies to celebrate the tenth National Day of the PRC.

Lin Daojing's story is actually the true experience of Yang Mo, the writer of the novel. Competition to play the character Lin Daojing was intense. Finally, a young girl from Hubei Opera Theatre, Xie Fang was selected.

The movie set a record at the box office, and Xie Fang was acclaimed for her excellent performance. Since then, Xie Fang has become one of the most popular movie stars in China.
