In East China, local residents of Suzhou city are looking forward to an upcoming full solar eclipse in late July. Amidst all of the excitement an embroidery artist has produced a series of works on the theme of the natural spectacle.

The series comprises a total of sixteen pieces. All of them were created through the traditional techniques of Suzhou style embroidery. The technique has enjoyed nationwide renown for centuries since the late Ming Dynasty.

In the year 1054, stargazers in ancient China recorded the explosion of a supernova. The debris of the astronomical event later became a crab-shaped nebula. The photographs of the nebula taken by the Hubble Telescope inspired one of the embroidery works in the series. The artist said it was a tribute to the inquiring minds of ancient scientists in China. But it was also a challenge to represent all of the colors and textures.
