Ji Xianlin spent most of his time at the General Hospital of the PLA in Beijing in the last six years of his life. The hospital room became his home and he treated the nurses who took care of him like family.

Charge nurse Liu Zhenrong said, "Every year on the Nurse's Day, he bought a cake for us. Each time when he released new books, he gave each of us one. We called him 'grandpa'. He was like our grandpa. Wherever we were, we were concerned about him. When we were buying something delicious, we considered whether grandpa could eat it. We were willing to take something for him when we were back from home."

Despite of his fame, Ji Xianlin led a simple life. Books were his lifetime best friend. Whether at home or in hospital, there was the fragrance of books. His son Ji Cheng recalled the days when they lived at Peking University and his father got up very early every day to study.
