Special Report: 2010 Shanghai Expo Countdown |

Nearly 3,000 new 3G base stations will be set up in Shanghai this year to form a network of 3G signals which will cover nearly the whole city. This was learnt from a conference aiming to promote the development of 3G and the construction and application of TD-SCDMA networks. A "Handheld Expo 2010 Shanghai" project is also being carried out.

Under China Mobile's plan, the Expo 2010 Shanghai Park will have 100 percent seamless TD network coverage. The construction of the park's TD network is underway, and is due for completion in 2009. The first 4G network and its testing area will be also built in the park.

Using the TD network's high bandwidth transmission capacity, Expo 2010 Shanghai will be presented online and brought to mobile terminals. Thus, Expo 2010 Shanghai will become the first in world expo history to be available through mobile communication networks. The idea of a "Handheld Expo 2010 Shanghai" will come true.

Another first for the Expo will be the use of “cell phone tickets”. When Expo 2010 Shanghai opens, cell phone ticket users will be allowed in by swiping their phones at park entrances, they will also be able to pay for shopping and meals in the park using their cell phones.
