WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Defense Department is distributing a new handbook to U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan on how to win the Afghans' trust and outsmart Taliban insurgents, local news reports said Thursday.

Titled "Small-Unit Operations in Afghanistan," the new battlefield manual warns U.S. soldiers that troops are at risk if they are aloof from the locals and uncaring of their needs.

The 123-page handbook also teaches soldiers on how to train for better defense at remote forward operating bases in Afghan terrain, warning that the Taliban insurgents adapt rapidly to shifts in tactics.

It will be delivered throughout the U.S. Army and will be available to NATO allies and other nations with troops in Afghanistan.
