MOSCOW, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Russia's fifth-generation fighter planes are set to start trials in November, the Air Force chief said Thursday.

The second prototype fighter jet is undergoing field trials, the Itar-Tass news agency quoted Air Force chief Alexander Zelin as saying.

Zelin acknowledged that there have been some problems with the engines the aircraft will use but research was continuing.

Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said in January that the fifth-generation fighter jets must start trials this year and be in use by the Air Force by 2015.

The fifth-generation fighter planes were designed to become the main force of the 21st century Russian army.
