Also in the Tibet Autonomous Region, an enormous five-year restoration project has concluded as work was completed on two palaces used by the Dalai Lamas, and an ailing ancient lamasery. The project has helped prevent the 1-thousand-3-hundred-year-old Potala Palace, formerly used as the Winter Palace of the Dalai Lamas, from being eroded by wind and literally eaten by worms.

The other structures included in the project were the Norbulingka, the Summer Palace of the Dalai Lamas and the Sagya Lamasery which contains a large number of rare religious relics. Norbulingka was aging poorly for the same reasons the Potala Palace and the Sagya Lamasery were. But with the restoration, the walls have been reinforced and some ruined palaces have been restored. Also, a new museum has been built to house relics. Over the years to come, some 570-million yuan RMB will be spent for restoring 22 cultural heritage sites in Tibet.
