Hong Kong Ballet has come to present three performances of 'Giselle' in the Poly Theatre. Like of lot of events around the capital these days, the shows are dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
"Giselle" is a heartrending tale of love, betrayal, and the supernatural. First performed in Paris in 1841, "Giselle" has rightfully become the jewel in the crown of classical ballet. Combining an intriguing plot, sympathetic leading characters, stunning choreography, and innovative music the ballet represents the height of the Romantic movement that swept Europe in the early 19th century.
The role of Giselle demands impeccable technical skill, outstanding grace and lyricism, and great dramatic flair. Although, the piece has been in the repertoire of ballet companies around the world and presented again and again, the Hong Kong Ballet has a different interpretation.
Hong Kong Ballet is one of the premier classical ballet companies in Asia and is becoming internationally recognized as a world-class institution with an identity that fully reflects the unique energy of Hong Kong. 2009 also marks the 30th anniversary since the Hong Kong Ballet was founded. Its 43 dancers originate from 11 countries and regions with a strong core of Chinese artists.
Since 1997, the Hong Kong Ballet has raised its international profile and has concluded 18 tours to 10 different countries throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.
