One month before the year-end film season begins, the competition has already started heating up. The most anticipated Chinese movies seem to be following the same formula that is, a combination of ancient Chinese stories, all-star casts, and prestigious directors.

Zhang Yimou has just released a scene from his latest work "Amazing Tales: Three Guns." Funnyman Xiao Shenyang and Yan Ni star along with cool guy Sun Honglei in the film, which is billed as a comedic thriller. With box office successes such as "Heroes" and "Curse of the Golden Flower" in his pocket, Zhang is confident this next effort will also find success.

Hong Kong director Teddy Chen's "Bodyguards and Assassins" features an A-list cast. 13 of the top actors from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan star in this revolutionary drama. It tells how people from all walks of life protected Sun Yat-Sen from being assassinated in 1906. The action scenes are the highlight of the film.

Another Hong Kong director Jingle Ma creates a new movie production retelling the ancient Chinese legend of female soldier Mulan. Her story was told in a Hollywood animated film of the same name and also a popular TV series. The partnership of actress Zhao Wei and actor Chen Kun also raises people's expectation. Already, the film has won high acclaim at the Cannes and Tokyo Film Festivals.

"Storm Warriors" is the only film in the group that boasts computer graphic technology. As the sequel of the "Storm Riders", which set a Hong Kong boxoffice record ten years ago, the new film enters the competition in a true test of its predecessor's popularity.
