Brazil dance thrills New York

Dancing usually happens on the ground that is unless you're Deborah Colker or a member of her dance company. The Brazilian choreographer is turning dance upside down literally! In her production "4 Por 4," which is being performed in New York, dancers are doing yoga and dancing on the walls.

In "4 Por 4" Colker creates four different universes that explore the relationship between movement and space. The stage itself transforms into a new dimension, and in one piece, Colker herself is playing the piano, while a classic duet is being performed. The stage then evolves yet again, this time into an obstacle course made up of 90 porcelain Chinese vases that the dancers must learn to navigate. The vases are more than just imaginary walls. For Colker, they are very symbolic.

Deborah Colker said, "The choreography is about delicacy, the choreography is about control, direction, precision and something in the vases that I relate with the way we live in big cities because we have more and more people and more and more cars and we have less and less spaces in our houses and to walk on the street. So we need to find our freedom and we need to find our personality, our space inside this small and shorter spaces."

Colker says she is most interested in exploring how the body moves in all its functions. And she doesn't shy away from movements or poses that may be considered provocative.

Colker brings all these traits to her next project, which she has written, directed, and choreographed. It's a Cirque de Soleil production entitled "OVO" that will travel to the U.S. in late November.
