There's a mother bear with three hungry cubs in tow versus a bachelor who's trying to mooch a bit of food - and only one salmon in sight.

The mother, who was showing her cubs the art of fishing over a waterfall, managed to snatch the salmon first and then, with a swipe of her huge paw, see off the chap who dared interrupt her.

Grizzly bears are known to be particularly fearsome when protecting cubs or a source of food.

The bears, which can stand up to 8ft tall on their hind legs, need to eat 90lb of fish a day to gain fat for winter hibernation.

The spectacular pictures were captured by Roman Golubenko, 44, in Katmai National Park, Alaska. Mr Golubenko, from North Bergen, in New Jersey, spent four days at the park's Naknek Lake - where around 200 grizzly bears gather each year for a feeding frenzy.
