BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Argentine national soccer team coach Diego Maradona visited hospitalized former soccer player Fernando Caceres on Monday, who was shot on Sunday early morning and has remained under serious conditions.
Maradona and Caceres were teammates during the U.S. World Cup 1994. Caceres was shot in his head during a robbery attempt in Ciudadela locality in Argentina.
The 40-year-old began playing professional soccer at Argentinos Juniors and in 1991 was transferred to River Plate where he won his first title.
Maradona told local TV channel TyC Sports that "nobody does anything" against the insecurity.
"If there was a person who did not deserve this, it was him. He will have another chance, because he is a great guy. Now he is in hands of God and I whish he helps him," said Maradona.
Maradona complained over the high crime rate in Buenos Aires and blamed the inaction of authorities. " This happens every day, it is not a thing at random. Here nobody does anything to curb this trend."
According to the doctor's report, Caceres has "very few possibilities" of surviving.
Buenos Aires' assistant director of health, Alejandro Collia, said "the patient is on grave critic state with mechanic respiratory assistance."
Caceres moved to Spain to play for Real Zaragoza, where he won the Spanish Cup in 1994 and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup the following year.
