Saving China's disappearing buildings

2009-11-19 10:46 BJT

With its world renowned Bund and dramatic skyline... As more and more old buildings are swept away to create our modern skylines, a Shanghai man is doing his best to save some of China's heritage from the wrecking ball. Through his efforts neglected structures once again reprise their former glory.

Traditional gardens in China are a common sight.

But this garden is different.

The Qing Dynasty club house for leather traders, a building which dates back nearly 200 years, was originally in Shanghai.

When retired multi-millionaire Jeffrey Wong heard it was going to be torn down for a new development he bought the building and moved it to Tongli, a town about an hour drive outside of Shanghai.

In the past few decades Wong has spent tens of millions of dollars buying more than 600 old buildings to preserve their valuable heritage.

Some have been restored at Wong's garden in Tongli, but Wong is still looking for land to buy and restore the rest of his collection.
