Venezuela warns UN on U.S. military bases in Colombia

CARACAS, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Venezuelan government on Wednesday warned the UN Security Council that the establishment of seven U.S. military bases in Colombia would pose a danger to Latin American stability.

Venezuela's UN Ambassador Jorge Valero's warning was an answer to the Colombian government's denouncement of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in front of the United Nations.

Valero said the government of Colombian President Alvaro Uribe had already shown its hostile intentions, backed by U.S. technology.

Venezuela would track the armed conflict in Colombia and the risks of establishing the U.S. military bases in Colombia, which were included in a military cooperation agreement between Colombia and the United States, Valero added.

"Our country wants to contribute to the peace, and it will take the necessary measure to keep safe, inside the judicial law, the Venezuelan territorial security and sovereignty of the people," Valero declared.

Valero suggested that Colombia was trying to deflect attention of the international public from the establishment of U.S. military bases by complaining about the destruction of two bridges-- used by drug traffickers -- at the border between Colombia and Venezuela.
