At the World Weightlifting Championships at Goyang, South Korea...Jang Mi-Ran of South Korea set a new world record to claim the gold medal in women's 75-kilogram and above division.

China's Meng Suping got bronze on the snatch with 131kg. But she failed to lift 173kg in the clean and jerk.

Home favorite Jang Mi-Ran grabbed the gold with 323kg over all. On her second attempt in the clean and jerk, the South Korean lifted 174kg which already guaranteed her the victory. But Jang asked for 187kg on her final attempt in a bid to set a new world record. She didn't let the home crowd down, successfully setting a new mark.

Podobedova setsworld records at weightlifting

In the earlier 75kg division competition, China sent Cao Lei on to the court. Cao was the former world champion in the snatch and clean and jerk in 2006, 2007. But today was a tough day for her. She asked for 112kg in her first attempt and finished with 121kg.

Then Svetlana Podobedova of Kazakhstan stepped up. She lifted 125kg on her first attempt and then comfortably moved on to 130kg.

That already sent Podobedova to the top of the podium, but she wasn't done yet. She would go on to lift 132 kilograms on her third and final attempt in the snatch, beating the previous world record by 1 kilogram.
