WASHINGTON, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. government on Sunday condemned the "unjust suppression" of civilians by the Iranian government saying the United States was on the side of protesters.

"We strongly condemn the violent and unjust suppression of civilians in Iran seeking to exercise their universal right," White House National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said in a statement. "Hope and history are on the side of those who peacefully seek their universal rights, and so is the United States."

Iranian police said five people were killed and over 300 were arrested in anti-government protests in Tehran on Sunday, according to local media reports.

Iranian police also said that the reason of the death is being investigated.
