EU ready to aid Greece: Barroso

2010-03-19 21:43 BJT

PARIS, March 19 (Xinhua) -- European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso told French media the European Union, including Germany, would extend aid to Greece if demanded, according to an interview transcript leaked Friday.

According to the transcript of an interview by France 24 channel, Barroso said "Germany is ready in case Greece will need (the aid) and as for now Greece didn't demand financial support."

However, the European leader didn't exclude the possibility that Greece would turn to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for help.

"What I want to remind is that Greece and all the member states of the EU are members of the IMF," Barroso said.

Local media said the interview was made on Thursday, but was expected to be broadcast on Saturday.
