Venezuela detains 8 alleged Colombian spies

CARACAS, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan Interior and Justice Minister Tarek El Aissami said Tuesday that authorities have detained eight Colombian citizens for allegedly spying.

The detainees had pictures of the Venezuelan national electricity system and road infrastructure, so they were possibly carrying out destabilization and electricity sabotage plans against Venezuela, Aissami told the private TV channel Venevision.

Aissami did not disclose any more details of the investigation, but he said that he will give a press conference in a few hours with more details on the captured spies.

He said that this is not the first time members of the Colombian Intelligence Administrative Department of Security (DAS) had been detained, as members of paramilitary groups in Venezuelan territory had been detained as well.

Commercial and political ties between Venezuela and Colombia were frozen due to the controversial U.S.-Colombia military agreement, which allows the presence of U.S. troops at seven Colombian military bases.
