Thailand travel slumps

The Songkran Water Festival has failed to cure Thailand's travel market blues. In some Beijing travel agencies, prices of package tours heading to the troubled country have dropped dramatically, with many tourists switching to nearby countries like Singapore and Malaysia, according to Beijing Evening News.

"We've only sold 30% of the Thailand package tours by chartered plane" said an employee of China Travel Service, the leading national travel agency.

In previous years, the traditional Water Festival in Thailand has proved a big draw for tourists, but the unstable social situation this year is putting off many potential holidaymakers. At present, Phuket is proving to be the most popular tourist destination in Thailand.
