Nuclear threats against Iran sign of West's lies on human rights

TEHRAN, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Judiciary Chief Sadeq Amoli-Larijani said on Sunday that nuclear threats against Iran demonstrates that the West's support for human rights is a "lie", the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.

"The Iranian nation has been standing against all threats for 30 years and the fact that Iran is being threatened with nuclear strike shows that the West's support for human rights is a lie," Amoli-Larijani was quoted as saying.

Earlier this month, the U.S. administration unveiled a new nuclear strategy which said that the U.S. will not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear weapon states that are parties to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and in compliance with their nuclear non-proliferation obligations.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates held a joint briefing with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Energy Steven Chu on the newly released strategy, known as Nuclear Posture Review.

This assurance means that countries like Iran and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea that had violated or renounced the treaty would remain on the potential target list of U.S. nuclear forces.

"It is disappointing that international circles remain silent on the U.S. president's unwise threats," Amoli-Larijani said, according to ISNA.

The West accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons. But Iran denies the allegations and insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purpose only.
