IAEA chief praises China's dedication

The Director General of IAEA, Yukiya Amano, says the world has made “big achievements” fighting nuclear terrorism over the past six years. Speaking in an exclusive interview with CCTV in Washington DC, Amano attributed this success to enhanced efforts by the international community and praised China for its dedication.

"China has been very active in the fight against nuclear terrorism. I visited your country last year, and I saw the construction site of the center of excellence of nuclear security. It is a very impressive site. China and the United States cooperated to install the equipment. This is a very good example among countries, between China and United States in this case, to contribute to the safety of the world," Yukiya Amano said.

Amano said preventing extremist groups from obtaining nuclear material is a major issue being discussed at the Nuclear Security Summit this year. The director general warned the risk of a nuclear terrorist attack is real -- even though no terrorist group has ever successfully launched such an attack.

He called on all member states to cooperate closely to enhance nuclear security further. And described the United Nations’ 22-70 resolution on DPRK’s nuclear test as a correct response to a clear violation of Security Council resolutions -- saying members of the Security Council reacted in accordance with their mandate.
