Nuclear safety and security are a major focus for the industry worldside. At Qinshan, China’s first and largest nuclear power base, they are a priority for authorities who continue to take extra steps to ensure damage would be minimal should the worst happen.

Qinshan is in a small county on the coast of eastern Zhejiang province, some 100 kilometers southwest of Shanghai. To protect it from the natural forces of the sea, an 1.8-kilometer seawall was built.

This is the enhanced and heightened seawall built after Japan's Fukushima accident in 2011. it is one of the shields protecting Qinshan from the sea and even a tsunami.

After 2011, Qinshan invested over 15 million US dollars in additional safety measures. The seawall is one of the projects.

“It was about nine meters. With a wave wall, it is now 12 meters high,” said Zhang Tao, General Manager, CNNP Nuclear Power Operations Management Co. LTD..

Inside the facility, the most visible structures are reactor containments.

Formed by reinforced concrete and metal plates, they can resist earthquakes, hurricanes even an aircraft!

There's even more protection inside the containments, meaning its safety standards are top of the range.

Nuclear security is important in a power plant. Every individual coming into this area must pass through multi-layered security, including using this magnetic access card with a code.

An emergency response mechanism was created, and regular drills are compulsory.

“Its main function is to effectively command the entire plant, including accident control, first-aid repair, radiation detection and access control,” said Zhu Yuelong, Director, Environmental Protection & Emergency Center, Qinshan.

14 radiation collection points have been set up within a 10-kilometer radius of the plant.

“The maximum dose of radiation for local people in a year is like smoking one cigarette," Zhu said.

Qinshan values its safety awareness very much.

From ordinary workers to senior operators, a strict training regime is mandatory.

They say, only through these, can safety and security be guaranteed.
