A couple Spanish sides would do battle in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Barcelona were hosting Atletico Madrid, and looking to make it seven straight wins against their rivals from the Spanish capital.
But the visitors would have the European champions on the ropes, and they would need the heroics of Luis Suarez after falling behind at the Nou Camp.
Lionel Messi seeking his 500th career goal.
Atletico would shock the home side -- after a long spell of possession, Koke receives a pass from Gabi and quick send Fernando Torres through who fires home. Vintage stuff from him, and his 11th goal in 15 matches against Barcelona gives Atletico a 1-nil lead.
But the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker gets booked for a late tackle on Neymar in the middle of the pitch four minutes after scoring.
And then he gets his marching orders for a second yellow card minutes later for fouling Sergio Busquets. Atletico down to 10-men
After the break Messi is inches away from his 500th career goal with a scissors kick.
Neymar alsmost ties things, but his shot rattles off the bar.
Finally after a flurry of chances for the home side, Jordi Alba's shot hits Suarez in front, and it is 1-1. Atletico appeal for off-side, but to no avail.
And about a dozen minutes later -- Barca produce a stunning goal. Messi to Suarez, out to Alves, and Suarez with the finish. His eighth champions league goal of the campaign is the winner as the Catalans take it 2-1.
Barcelona 2 - Atletico Madrid 1
Vidal's early goal gives Bavarians opening leg win
Elsewhere, Benfica, aiming to reach the European Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990 were visiting Bayern Munich.
But the Bavarians would got off to the perfect start, Juan Bernat's cross is met perfectly by Arturo Vidal. The Chilean giving his side the lead just two minutes in.
Benfica, twice European champions in the 1960s, kept possession despite creating few real chances, they should have done better with this opportunity in the second half instead Jonas's shot cannons back of Bayern's Javi Martinez when the goal was gaping.
The hosts would look to add another late -- Vidal finds Robert Lewandowski in space, but his pass is out of the reach of Philip Lahm -- and the Bavarians miss the wide-open net. Regardless, Bayern hold on for a 1-nil win.
