Rival Yemeni parties will gather in Kuwait today for UN-brokered peace talks, despite multiple violations of a week-old ceasefire.

The negotiations bring together representatives of the Gulf-backed government and rebels supported by Iran. The talks aim to bring to an end 13 months of fighting that have devastated the already-impoverished Yemen.

The UN Special Envoy to Yemen has said the peace process might be difficult but still possible. The ceasefire has been violated numerous times. Fighting has been unabated in the northeast rebel-held city of Sanaa, killing nine pro-government soldiers on Sunday. The UN estimates that the war has killed more than 6-thousand people, and forced nearly 3-million from their homes.
