From only one vaccine against smallpox, to the 14 free vaccines available in the national immunization program in China. The country has seen great medical progress since it began the program in 1978.

China's immunization program has been highly commended by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund. Started in 1978, the program has since come a long way.

According to data from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, during the period between 1978-2014, China has seen a 99 percent decrease in morbidity and mortality of 6 diseases -- the whooping cough, measles, diphtheria, tetanus, tuberculosis and polio.

It is estimated that through the child immunization program in China, more than 300 million cases and 4 million deaths related to tuberculosis and polio have been prevented since 1978.

China once had a hepatitis B epidemic, with over 690 million people infected before the vaccination was widely available in the 80s. But in 2012, the World Health Organization confirmed that China had reached a milestone -- less than 2 percent of children under 5 years old were infected with the hepatitis B virus.

Relevant laws have been passed to ensure the security of vaccines, and China has also strengthened the supervision and management of Adverse Effects Following Immunization, also shortened as AEFI. The World Health Organization has hailed China's AEFI supervision, with a 100% pass rate for all 8 monitor function indicators.
