China says software copyright registration has seen rapid growth in the last 5 years. According to a report released on copyright registration during the 12th five-year plan period, the number of registrations was nearly 4 times that in the previous five years, and 16 times the five-year period before that.

China began recording registrations in 1992. It took 20 years for annual registrations to reach 100-thousand. After that, registrations jumped dramatically, doubling to 200-thousand annually in three years, and now hit 300,000. The report says efforts to combat copyright infringement and piracy during the last five years had obvious effect. An official from China's copyright administration said the government will strengthen law enforcement to protect the interests of the people.

"Popularization of legitimate software promotes the protection of the intellectual property rights in the whole society. We have a zero tolerance for copyright infringement and piracy. We will strengthen law enforcement in the central government. We will also implement the system of responsibility for provincial law enforcement. Meanwhile, we will promote education, so our Chinese nation could be more innovative," Yan Xiaohong, deputy director of National Copyright Administration of China, said.
