Fumio Kishida said prior to his visit that Japan wants warmer relations with China. Kishida was named foreign minister in Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet in December 2012.

The Japanese minister stressed the importance of dialogue in diplomatic ties between Asian countries. He also proposed major expectations for the development of China-Japan relations.

Kishida met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in November 2014, during an APEC meeting of ministerial level in Beijing. Back in 2006, Kishida paid a visit to the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall in eastern China.
