Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida arrived in Beijing today, starting his 3-day official visit to China. It is Kishida's first visit to Beijing since the end of 2014.

Kishida visited Hiroshima University's Beijing research centre at Capital Normal University Friday afternoon. He is expected to meet with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi Saturday. They will hold talks on bilateral and international issues of common concern, including the South China Sea and September's G20 Summit.

Kishida had said prior to his visit that Japan hopes to warm relations with China through honest talks. While the Chinese Foreign Ministry has expressed hope that "Japan can meet China halfway."

Ties between China and Japan have long been strained by territorial disputes and historical issues, but have recently reached a better status.
