Tourism is not the only thing that has exploded at Nanluogu Xiang, also as known as South Luogu Lane. The number of stores in the 700 meter long alley has almost tripled in less than ten years.

Rent hikes have also gone crazy there. A seven-fold increase in rates was seen between 2010 and 2013. While visitor numbers, stores and rent continue to surge, the authenticity of the area has suffered. Less than 10 percent of the stores there now sell genuine traditional Beijing food specialties or souvenirs.

The rest of the retailing space is currently occupied by major chains. Nanluogu Xiang isn’t the first to initiate control measures limiting the number of daily visitors. Another must-see site in the capital, the Forbidden City, has imposed a daily cap of of 80,000 visitors to maintain order.

Other top scenic draws including West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, the Confucius Temple in Nanjing Jiangsu province and Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan have also installed daily caps to avoid overcrowding.
