In Ecuador, Chinese Red-Cross workers are helping resettle victims and rebuild infrastructure that was destroyed in last month's earthquake. The Chinese team met with Ecuador's military near the coastal city of Bahia de Caraquez to discuss relief efforts and reconstruction plans.
Providing temporary housing for thousands of people -- who lost their homes -- is at the top of the Chinese team's agenda. Chinese rescue crew will also train locals about hygiene and fire safety.
More than 650 people died in Ecuador's magnitude-7.8 quake last month. It was the largest quake to hit the nation in almost 40 years. A Chinese Red Cross crew member said he is proud to be in Ecuador on International Workers' Day to help those who need it most.
"It's the most meaningful Labor Day for the rescue team. We will do our best to provide relief to the Ecuadorian people affected by the earthquake, and offer shelter for the homeless," said Liu Yanping from Chinese Red Cross Rescue Team.
"The Chinese rescue team has done a wonderful job. They are putting up tents very fast, which shows their support for us. We'll hang on as they are helping us. We are so grateful to them," said earthquake survivor Miriam.
