China has repeated its strong opposition to the arbitration over islands in the South China Sea, initiated by the Philippines.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said the arbitration is in violation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

"As early as in 2006, China issued a government statement to exclude compulsory arbitration according to Article 298 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The focus of the disputes in the South China Sea between China and the Philippines is the fact that the Philippines has illegally occupied China's islets and reefs of the Nansha Islands and the disputes over maritime sovereignty between the two countries," said Spokesman Hong Lei.

The spokesman said the Philippines is trying to disguise its illegal occupation of islets and reefs by unilaterally initiating the arbitration. He said this is an abuse of the process of compulsory arbitration in the convention and of the basic principles of international law on national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
