The Arab League has met to discuss the situation in Aleppo, where more than 250 people have been killed in the last 10 days. The Syrian government was condemned for its role in the violence.
“We severely condemn all acts of aggression, sporadic bombings and air raids that target civilian homes, hospitals, schools in Aleppo and other regions of Syria,” said Nabil Al Araby, Arab League Secretary-General.
“Killings committed by the forces loyal to the Syrian government or by terrorist groups and armed factions affiliated to ISIL and other terrorist groups. These are considered crimes against humanity and those responsible must be brought to international justice.”
Statements that reflect the feeling of anger among Arab nations for the atrocities in in Aleppo. League Members blamed the Syrian president and his main ally Russia. But Russia says the air raids targeted terrorists not civilians. The Arab League demanded U.N. security council, convening on the same day, to force the warring factions into a ceasefire.
“We re-affirm our demands for the U.N. security council to live up to its responsibilities in maintaining peace and security and to work on adapting resolution’s 2254 for the year 2015, and 2068 for the year 2016, relating to a ceasefire in all of Syria. And to take all the necessary legal measures and suitable procedures to achieve peace as soon as possible,” said Ahmed Bin Helly, deputy chief of Arab League.
As the Cairo meeting convened fierce clashes continued in Syria’s Aleppo increasing the civilian death toll. But there was some encouraging news. Moscow, announced it has retrieved 30 planes, including all of its Sukhoy fighter jets from Syria.
Amid the horrific situation in Syria, the latest moves by Arab and international community including Russia, has created a glimmer of hope that, maybe, a diplomatic solution could be near.
