Turkey expects 'new page' in relations with EU

Turkey says it will work to complete more "benchmarks" on its visa liberalization roadmap by the end of next month, after the EU gave conditional backing to visa-free travel to the nation.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday that the nation welcomes the EU's move. He said visa-free travel could herald a "new page" in the relations between the EU and Ankara.

"We should understand that we don't need each other only in times of crisis. That's why the European Union should work with Turkey on a strategic level. I hope this deal will be approved by the European Parliament and the European Council. This decision is a new page in the process ahead of us in relations with the European Union," said Mevlut Cavusoglu.
