China has reiterated its firm stance on protecting its sovereignty and maritime interests in the South China Sea. The Chinese Foreign Ministry made the statement in response to an arbitration, which was unilaterally initiated by the Philippines in early 2013. The case is due to be heard by a five-judge tribunal in The Hague.

"All those attempts that try to force China to compromise over our interests in the South China Sea or to make it into a fait accompli are nothing but illusions. Whatever ruling the tribunal will come to would be unlawful and invalid,"

"China will never recognize or accept the ruling. China will continue protecting its sovereignty and maritime interests. We will also firmly safeguard the international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea," said Hong Lei, spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry.
