British Labour Party's Sadiq Khan has been elected mayor of London. He now becomes the first Muslim mayor of an EU member capital city.

The Labour politician beat his major rival, Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith. Khan's parents migrated to England from Pakistan in the 1960s -- shortly before he was born in 1970. Having studied law at the University of North London, Khan was a human rights lawyer before entering politics.

He becomes London's third directly-elected mayor, after Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson. He grew up in public housing in inner city London. Khan's rise from a housing estate to City Hall is being hailed as a modern fairytale.

"Thank you London. London is the greatest city in the world, I'm so proud of our city. I'm deeply humbled by the hope and trust you've placed in me today. I grew up in a council estate, just a few miles from here. Back then, I never dreamt that someone like me could be elected as mayor of London. I want to say thank you to every single Londoner for making the impossible possible today," Khan said.
