Long March-7 showcases several special design features

CCTV has paid a visit to the manufacturing base in Tianjin, where the Long March-7 was assembled. The rocket features an advanced payload fairing, the nose cone used to protect a rocket against the impact of dynamic pressure, and aerodynamic heating during launch through the atmosphere.

Judging from its size and appearance, this nose cone may look pretty much the same as previous Long March modules. However, many changes have been made to its insides.

Long March-7 will be launched in Hainan Province. It's the first time a Chinese rocket will be launched in an area prone to frequent rain showers...and engineers had to take this into account during the design process.

"We have a waterproof design for the air bleed hole of Long March-7, as it will be launched in Hainan, and rain could enter the fairing. Similar designs also used on switches," said Hu Xiaojun, deputy chief designer of Long March-7 rocket.

Changes have also been made in the rocket's fuel and engine systems. It now uses liquid oxygen and kerosene as fuel, which is environmentally friendly. The booster is more advanced than previous modules, and can provide more power.

The Long March-7 will help deliver China's first space cargo ship "Tianzhou-1" into orbit.
