Vegetable & pork prices stabilize in China

Vendors say vegetable and pork prices have stabilized in recent days after being especially high over the past two months, especially during the Chinese New Year holiday.

Vegetables and pork are major ingredients in most Chinese dishes and consumers and sellers are sensitive to price changes. Sellers in Beijing's XinFadi wholesale market have noticed that price increases have gradually slowed over the past four weeks.

"The prices dropped over a half. The green pepper used to be eight yuan per kilogram. Now it is two yuan or less," said a vegetable seller of Xinfadi Wholesale Market.

XinFaDi's data shows that vegetable prices dropped nearly one fourth in April. Sellers say that's because as temperatures rise, farms in northern China are producing more vegetables and driving prices down as a result.

"For now, the supply is recovering. Vegetable prices are going to drop continuously. In other words, prices will likely be back to previous years' levels in May," said Liu Tong, Head of Statistics Dept. of Xinfadi Wholesale Market.

Pork prices have been stabilizing as well. That's because the Beijing municipal government has put more frozen pork reserves into the market since last week.

"Our pork prices have decreased about 18 percent on average," said a supermarket employee.

Beijing will also increase market supplies to keep pork prices at a certain level. Most vegetable and pork prices are stabilizing. But some vegetables such as garlic, carrots and potatoes remain expensive.
