Shooting and bomb attacks claimed by ISIL killed at least 16 people in northern Iraq on Friday, two days after explosions that killed more than 80 people in Baghdad.

Three gunmen opened fire with machine guns around midnight at a cafe in the predominately Shi'ite town of Balad, killing at least 12 and wounding 25.

One of them set off his explosive vest at a nearby vegetable market after police and Shi'ite militia members cornered him in a disused building and exchanged gunfire.

With over 100 people killed over two days, hundreds of people have taken to the streets in Baghdad, protesting against political corruption and denouncing the government for failing to protect them.
