The Chinese government has been conducting the country's first comprehensive survey of rural children who have been left behind by their migrant worker parents.

A large database will be set up and will include important information like their geographical distribution, family circumstances, educational status.

The investigative survey is jointly conducted by the ministries of Civil Affairs, Education and Public Security. This survey is the start of a long-term process that is aimed at monitoring their welfare, and eventually reducing the number of left-behind children.
