Hong Kong will play a key role in the Belt and Road initiative as an international business hub. Some business associations recently visited central Asia to investigate the local markets. Representatives in the delegation found there's a great potential for trade and cooperation in the area.

Kazakhstan has released a series of measures in recent years to boost its economy. That includes simplify business registration procedures, expanding visa-free coverage, and stimulating overseas investment.  China is currently Kazakhstan's biggest trading partner. Hong Kong also exports products such as telecommunications equipment and computers to the country.

"After entering this market, we can reach bilateral trading agreements with the entire central Asia area. We can get tax free among central Asian countries, and achieve interconnections with the Commonwealth of Independent States. This can help us to explore new markets," said Eddy Li, president of Chinese manufacturers' assoc. of HK.

The delegation signed memorandums with several central Asian cities during its visit as it hopes to establish cooperation under the Belt and Road initiative.

"Many central Asian regions are still with high taxes and market protections. It would be difficult for us to directly make commercial talk with them. But under the Belt and Road initiative, we can be part of China's negotiations with local countries. And Hong Kong companies will be benefited after the projects are launched. The development offered us new opportunities, and we need to work with the government to achieve success," Li said.

The Belt and Road initiative is advancing development in countries along the route. Hong Kong is facing an unprecedented opportunity and also a challenge to break through local export channels and extend the distribution chain.
