Feel like getting a dose of out-of-hours culture? Beijing's Capital Museum will be open tonight to mark International Museum Day. Meanwhile, the capital's Cultural Exchange Museum is staging music performances and offering hands-on cultural activities. They are among the 97 museums offering free admission today in Beijing.

Along with free admission, Beijing's museums are staging performances, special exhibitions, and talks.

For example, the Beijing Cultural Exchange Museum is inviting visitors to try their hand at making Peking Opera masks, paper-cuttings, dough figurines, and colored clay rabbits.

And the Capital Museum - in collaboration with the Beijing Volunteer Federation - is keeping all its exhibition halls open and inviting more than a thousand volunteers from all walks of life to experience the museum's night-tour.

"This year's theme is 'Museums and Cultural Landscapes', which aims to enhance the museums' role of public service and to offer a more diverse cultural role in the future. In recent years, International Museum Day has become an important platform for the museums to communicate and interact with visitors." said Yu Ping, deputy director of BJ Municipal Admin. of Cultural Heritage.

The International Museum Association declared May the 18th World Museum Day in 1977. Beijing has held activities to mark the day since 1995.
