NATO foreign ministers are set to discuss a recent request from Iraq’s prime minister to expand a NATO military training program for Iraqi officers for battles against the Islamic State.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday that NATO is considering supplying an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) for the U.S.-led fight against the terrorist group.

“We are stepping up our efforts to help Iraq. We are looking into what more we can do for direct support to the Coalition also with AWACS capabilities, and we are working with several countries in the region like Tunisia and Jordan to help them defend themselves and to remain the stable countries in the region of a lot of instability,” Stoltenberg said.

“So yes, we are stepping up our efforts to fight terrorism but that’s not something we are doing at the expense of our efforts addressing the challenges in Europe. We have to do both or collective defence in Europe, we have to do both at the same time.”
