EgyptAir passenger jet off radar screen en route to Cairo from Paris

An EgyptAir passenger jet heading from Paris to Cairo has disappeared from radar. The plane was carrying 56 passengers and 10 crew members.

According to the airline, the aircraft's flight number is M-S 8-0-4. It departed from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport 23-09 Central European Summer Time, or 21-09 GMT. The plane is an Airbus A320.

It was travelling at an altitude of 37,000 feet when it vanished from radar 20 minutes before it was due to land. Search and rescue efforts have started.

According to flightradar24 DOT com, the 12-year-old plane's last known position was above the Mediterranean Sea. 

The airline has provided families of passengers with contact numbers from both inside and outside the country. We will bring you more information as soon as we have it.
