French investigators confirm smoke before EgyptAir crashed

To start with the latest on the crash of EgyptAir Flight MS804. French investigators have confirmed media reports that smoke had been detected on board before the jet crashed into the Mediterranean on Thursday. But they have no further details on the cause of the smoke.

PARIS, May 19, 2016 (Xinhua) -- Photo taken on May 19, 2016 shows an airplane of EgyptAir taking off at the Charles de Gaulle Airport, in Paris, France. Egypt's Foreign Ministry confirmed to Egyptian Civil Aviation Ministry that wreckages of the missing airplane were found near the Greek Island of Karpathos, EgyptAir said on Thursday. Earlier in the day, EgyptAir said the missing plane, an Airbus A320, disappeared from radar screens en route from Paris to Cairo Thursday at 2:45 am Cairo local time (0045 GMT), with 66 people aboard. A search operation is underway in a 64-kilometer radius area in the Mediterranean, with countries include Greece, France, the UK, Cyprus and Italy joining the search. An investigation group has been formed to look into the crash, but many suspect that terrorists might be behind it.
