The flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China, People's Daily, has made a commentary after Taiwan's new leader, Tsai Ing-wen, assumed office on Friday. It has urged Tsai to develop peaceful cross-straits relations.

The People's Daily said Tsai has a choice of different paths, each of which leads to different futures. Her choice whether or not to bring cross-straits ties closer involves the direct interests of people from both sides of the Straits, as well as the peace and stability in the region.

The commentary mentioned that although Tsai has stated she would continue advancing the peaceful and stable growth of cross-straits ties, she has deliberately avoided the 1992 Consensus. Its core has stipulated the mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China, and that cross-straits ties are not state-to-state relations.

The commentary also reaffirmed the party's stance on the "fundamental issue of the nature of cross-straits relations," and that Taiwan's new leader must clearly respond about it. The commentary also has said the party holds a "predominant power" in cross-straits relations, despite having complex issues.
