Boats navigate flood waters to deliver aid

05-21-2016 12:38 BJT

Over in Sri Lanka, hundreds of small boats have navigated deep flood waters to deliver aid and rescue stranded people.

The week-long rains have caused chaos across the country, unleashing deadly landslides and driving tens of thousands from their homes. Official updates report at least 68 people have died from lightning strikes, drowning, falling trees and landslides triggered by the rains over the last five days. That includes at least 35 confirmed victims of mudslides that swallowed up three hillside villages in the central district of Kegalle. Hundreds are still missing.

The meteorological department has warned of more downpours, especially in the southwest.
